Lawn Maintenance Through the Seasons
Seasonal Lawn Maintenance Tips
Keeping up with lawn maintenance throughout the seasons can be difficult. Maybe your lawn looks perfect in spring but then starts to look a little dry in summer. What should you do if that happens? And what about lawn maintenance in fall and winter? If you don’t have the right techniques and tactics, your lawn may not be looking it’s best. Here’s what you can do to make sure that doesn’t happen.
SPRING
After the winter cold subsides, it’s time to get serious about lawn maintenance. You have to give your lawn the proper care it needs to take advantage of the warm weather and increased rainfall. First, you should rake up anything that may have fallen into your yard during winter. Dead leaves and twigs should be removed at this stage. Next, make sure you don’t fall behind on your mowing and edging. Your grass will be growing quite a bit during this time, so make sure you’re mowing consistently. Remember, you shouldn’t need to cut more than ⅓ of the grass blades when you mow. You should also be fertilizing your grass and seeding.
SUMMER
During summer, you’ll have to start accounting for heat. You should continue to mow as needed, but make sure you’re not cutting the grass too short. You also need to be watering your lawn regularly. If the days are particularly hot, make sure you’re providing your lawn with the extra water that it needs.
FALL
One of the most important parts of lawn maintenance in the autumn months is keeping up with the leaves falling. Leaves covering your lawn can smother it and deprive it of sunlight. Raking once a week should be sufficient to counter these effects. You should also be feeding your lawn more than normal to prepare it for the winter months. Aerating heavy traffic areas of the lawn is also essential to fight compacting and drainage issues.
WINTER
People often neglect lawn maintenance in winter. While you don’t need to do as much as you normally do during other seasons, there are still things you can do to get your lawn ready for spring. Seeding, aerating, and raking on an as-needed basis can help your lawn stay healthy.
